The essence of Mayalde: a brand that speaks softly yet says a lot

There are ranches that need noise to be noticed, and others that prefer the quiet authority of an open field and bulls staring straight at you. Conde de Mayalde belongs firmly to the latter. You can’t truly understand this house until you walk across “El Castañar”, surrounded by ancient holm oaks that seem to have been guarding its history forever.

I’ve always believed that the countryside has a memory of its own, and here it is especially vivid: from the early 1940s, when Humberto Sánchez Tabernero built the foundations of the herd with Sánchez Fabrés cattle —those sharp, agile Coquilla roots— to the bold decisions that have shaped its present identity.

But if you mention “Mayalde” at a taurine gathering, everyone agrees on one thing: its character today is the result of many hands, many eras, and above all, many brave choices.

I say this because years ago, on a visit, a herdsman told me with a half smile: “Nothing here is left to chance… except the bull, who always has the final say.” I’ve never forgotten that line. It sums up the philosophy of this ranch perfectly.

A journey through the ranch’s history

The destiny of the brand took a decisive turn in 1949 when José Finat y Escrivá de Romaní, Count of Mayalde, acquired the herd in the name of his wife, Casilda de Bustos. A new iron and new colours followed, marking a fresh beginning.

The major transformation arrived in 1958 with the purchase of half of the Sepúlveda herd, of Contreras origin. From that moment, Mayalde began shaping a more serious, traditional, and demanding type of bull.

The incorporation of Juan Pedro Domecq sires in 1986 and 1990, along with cows acquired from Francisco Medina —El Ventorrillo, sharing the same root— brought modern refinement to the breeding strategy without losing the Contreras character that defines the brand.

In 2011, Rafael Finat, grandson of the original owner, added cows from Victoriano del Río, always maintaining that delicate balance between the old and the new. Few ranches manage such equilibrium with the same natural ease.

The Mayalde bloodline: crossed identity, unmistakable character

To speak of the Mayalde encaste is to speak of a carefully crafted blend. Three distinct souls coexist here:

  • The Contreras foundation, giving seriousness, classic presence, and intense, challenging bravery.
  • The Domecq influence, adding class, depth, and a modern sort of elegance.
  • The crossed branch, perhaps the most defining element of all.

The result is a bull of medium size, well-proportioned, low-set, and with wide, open horns that show their points. Brown coats are most common, though blacks, sardos and the occasional burraco or red can appear.

Above all, these are bulls with engine, as the herdsmen like to say. Bulls that repeat, push, and demand full focus from the moment the muleta is raised. They do not allow hesitation; they make you earn every pass.

There are afternoons when this ranch puts both toreros and spectators to the test—and in these times of increasing uniformity, that is also a virtue. A Mayalde bull does not pretend: it charges with conviction, or it defends with conviction, but it never goes unnoticed.

Conclusion: a ranch that evolves without losing its soul

The Conde de Mayalde ranch is not governed by trends. Its evolution is slow, thoughtful, almost artisanal. And perhaps that is why its bull retains such a strong identity: a blend of Contreras depth, Domecq finesse, and a unique, unmistakable seal.

If you’re planning to enjoy a bullfight where the bull itself takes centre stage from the moment it bursts through the gate, you can buy your tickets through Servitoro: the safest, simplest, and most reliable way to purchase bullfighting tickets today.

Some herds truly deserve to be witnessed in the flesh—and this is certainly one of them.
