San Isidro 2026: Borja Jiménez, in a solo appearance, at the In Memoriam Bullfight for Ignacio Sánchez Mejías
On Sunday 7 June at 7:00 pm, the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas hosts one of the most symbolically charged events of the season: the In Memoriam Bullfight, held once the San Isidro Festival has concluded. This edition is dedicated to Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, a key figure in bullfighting and Spanish cultural history of the 20th century.
Bulls from Cortés and Domingo Hernández, two breeders regularly featured in first-category arenas, will be fought in a solo performance by Borja Jiménez, who assumes full responsibility for the afternoon in a context of maximum demand.
Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, a Key Figure in Bullfighting and Cultural History
Each year, the In Memoriam Bullfight pays tribute to a fundamental figure in bullfighting or in the history of Las Ventas. On this occasion, the honour is dedicated to Ignacio Sánchez Mejías, a leading matador of the early 20th century and a multifaceted personality of great cultural influence. In addition to being a bullfighter, he was a patron and promoter of the Generation of ’27, closely linked to authors such as Federico García Lorca, who immortalised him in his elegy Lament for the Death of Ignacio Sánchez Mejías.

Why Is the In Memoriam Bullfight Important in Madrid?
The In Memoriam Bullfight is not just another date in Madrid’s bullfighting calendar. It is an act of remembrance, respect and continuity, in which the public pays tribute to those who have left a lasting mark on the history of bullfighting. Its commemorative nature turns each edition into an afternoon of special symbolism, where the matador’s commitment takes on added significance as he seeks to honour a historic legacy at the world’s foremost bullring.
Borja Jiménez: A Solo Appearance at Las Ventas
Borja Jiménez faces this In Memoriam Bullfight at one of the strongest moments of his career. At Las Ventas, he has achieved several Puerta Grande exits, all earned against highly demanding bullfights, establishing himself as one of the most reliable names at the arena. In Bilbao, in 2025, he delivered one of the season’s major milestones by pardoning the bull Tapaboca, from La Quinta, a historic event at Vista Alegre that confirmed his ability to take on major responsibilities and respond with authority under maximum pressure. His solo appearance in Madrid represents a top-level challenge and a clear statement of commitment and ambition.
