The History of Almonte and the Pilgrimage of the Virgin of El Rocío

Almonte is a town located around 48 kilometres from Huelva, in the very heart of a fertile and generous land. Its rural character, bright streets and simple architecture reflect the welcoming nature of a community deeply rooted in its traditions.

Very close to Almonte stands the Sanctuary of the Virgin of El Rocío, the spiritual centre of one of the most deeply rooted Marian devotions in Andalusia. Around Pentecost (the Feast of the Holy Spirit), the Pilgrimage of El Rocío becomes one of the most distinctive and widely attended religious and popular celebrations in Spain.

Every year, brotherhoods from different parts of the country cross the vast marshland plains in a pilgrimage full of symbolism. Decorated carts, horse riders, traditional country dress and a festive atmosphere blend with prayer, singing and dancing, creating a unique celebration in which the religious and the popular coexist.

The pilgrimage is described as an intense and multifaceted festival, where traditional songs, sevillanas and fandangos merge with devotion to the Virgin. Writers and poets have defined El Rocío as a paradoxical celebration: fervent and joyful, popular and deeply spiritual.

The climax comes with the processional of the Virgin of El Rocío, the Blanca Paloma (White Dove), when emotion overflows and fervour reaches its peak. It is then that the people express, without filters or forced solemnity, a devotion based on love, closeness and a tradition passed down from generation to generation.

Places to visit

Almonte is a town of white, luminous and disorderly streets whose main artery is the Plaza de la Virgen de Rocío, which houses the baroque-style town hall and the casino. The parish church of La Asunción and the chapels of San Bartolomé and El Cristo are the religious buildings that deserve the most attention.

The Museo de la Villa de Usos y Costumbres Populares is another of Almonte's highlights. It is housed in an old oil mill, located in Calle Sebastián Conde. The museum is aimed at preserving the historical and architectural heritage of this village.

In the surrounding area, don't miss a visit to the Almonte Forestry Interpretation Centre (8 kilometres along the Almonte-El Rocío road), located in a pine forest of great ecological value.

A little further on, 30 kilometres away and well worth seeing, are the beaches of Matalascañas with its extensive fine white sands bordering the Doñana Park, a natural jewel not only of Andalusia, but of the whole of Spain, in which the Palacio El Acebrón, a unique building containing an ethnographic exhibition on Doñana, stands out.
