Biography

José Carlos Venegas belongs to that generation of bullfighters who have had to carve out their place through determination and authenticity. His name began to gain attention during his years as a novillero, particularly after his debut with picadores in 2006, when he cut four ears in Villanueva del Arzobispo, proving that his classical style and wholehearted approach had real potential.

His alternativa took place in Alicante on 7 August 2010, a day of great responsibility. Curro Díaz handed him the first bull of Los Chospes, and Venegas responded with composure, cutting a trophy from each of his two bulls. Years later, during San Isidro 2014, he confirmed his doctorate with a serious Cuadri bullfight, sharing the bill with Javier Castaño and Iván García—an afternoon that strengthened his reputation as a torero capable of handling the most demanding bloodlines.

His recent seasons have been marked by solid and consistent triumphs. In 2017, in the same arena where he appears again today, he cut an ear from a Saltillo bull, a bloodline he handles with notable skill. In 2015, also in September, he earned another trophy from a José Joaquín Moreno Silva bull.

Last season he delivered one of his most complete campaigns:

Villanueva del Arzobispo (Jaén): two ears from a Victorino Martín bull

San Martín de Valdeiglesias (Madrid): one ear from a Los Eulogios bull

Arroyo del Ojanco (Jaén): one ear and two ears from bulls of Los Ronceles

Today, Venegas is regarded as a respected matador for his ability to interpret the most demanding encastes and for the sincerity with which he stands before the bull.

Taurine Vocation

José Carlos Venegas’ vocation was born in his hometown of Beas de Segura, where bullfighting tradition is deeply rooted in local culture. From a young age he showed a special sensitivity towards the art of toreo, drawn to the elegance of the cape and the emotion of the ritual. His time at the local bullfighting school —along with countless capeas and tentaderos in the region— helped shape a classical, sober and highly personal style.

One of the most notable curiosities about Venegas is his ability to adapt to a wide range of bloodlines, particularly those of Santa Coloma and Albaserrada, where he has delivered some of his most powerful performances. His toreo, free of artifice, resonates with aficionados who seek authenticity.
