Calerito

Calerito was a Cordoban bullfighter with a refined soul and natural composure, born in 1927 in Villaviciosa de Córdoba. His vocation emerged early, and after moving to Valencia he began shaping his bullfighting career with a dedication that led him to debut at a very young age. His appearance in Las Ventas in 1949 placed him among the most promising novilleros of his generation. He took the alternativa in Córdoba in 1950 and later confirmed it in Madrid and Mexico, always leaving the mark of a classic, sincere bullfighter with serene courage. Although his career was brief due to illness, he is remembered as an authentic torero—one of those who truly fight with their soul.

Biography

There are bullfighters who seem to be made of a different substance, as if time itself had shaped them for a single purpose: to step onto the sand and speak to the bull in a language only they understand. Manuel Calero Cantero, “Calerito,” was one of those chosen. His story is not just that of a torero, but of a young man who lived fast, fought with his soul, and left a trail that is still remembered with respect.

He was born on 19 January 1927 in Villaviciosa de Córdoba, a place where rural life and bullfighting culture blend naturally. From a young age he showed a special sensitivity toward bullfighting — that mix of art and risk that frightens many but called to him like an inevitable destiny. His family later moved to Valencia, and there, among tentaderos and long afternoons of learning, the bullfighter he would become began to take shape.

A vocation that cannot be improvised

His calling was never a youthful whim. Those who watched him grow in the training rings remember a serious, focused boy, with a gaze that seemed to read the bull before it even charged. He possessed that gift that cannot be taught: naturalness. And he had something even harder to find: truth — that way of bullfighting without artifice, without striking poses, guided only by pure feeling.
